What is the Carte Vitale

The Vitale card is a personal, secure, and free card that allows you to be identified with the French Health Insurance. This card contains all the necessary information to support your care. It eliminates the need to send in paper care sheets, speeding up your reimbursement process.

🩺 How is the Vitale Card Used?

When you visit a healthcare professional (like a doctor or dentist), they use your Vitale card to create an electronic care sheet, replacing the traditional paper version. This information is sent directly to your health insurance organization, ensuring that you are reimbursed quickly—usually within a week.

In some cases, the Vitale card allows you to avoid paying upfront for medical costs (referred to as the “paying third party”).

🌍 European Coverage

If you are traveling in Europe, you can request the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to ensure your medical expenses are covered during short stays in EU countries.

📱 Digital Services with the Vitale Card

The Vitale card also gives you access to various online health insurance services, including the ability to manage your pharmaceutical dossier and more.

🧑‍⚕️ Who Can Get a Vitale Card?

In order to receive a Vitale card, you must have a Social Security number. The card validates your identity and confirms your rights to health coverage in France.

📝 How to Receive the Vitale Card

You can order your Vitale card through your Ameli account or via the Ameli app. If you’re under 16, your primary health insurance provider will contact you. For new arrivals in France, you can order the card online once you have your Social Security number.

📅 Update Your Vitale Card

It is important to update your Vitale card at least once a year or when there are changes to your personal or professional circumstances (e.g., moving, changing doctors, or long-term health conditions).

🚨 What to Do in Case of Loss or Theft

If your Vitale card is lost or stolen, you can report it online through the Ameli account or contact your health insurance provider by phone. You will receive a new card within 2 to 3 weeks.
